African American Heritage Tour – Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia’s African American history is nearly as old as the city itself. The slaves were brought here as early as 1684. By 1780, when Pennsylvania became the first colony to abolish slavery, the city had a large free Black community. Visit the Liberty Bell and The President’s House, which served as the first “White House” while Philadelphia was the capital of the United States. See “Old Pine” Presbyterian Church, which is said to have been a stop along the Underground Railroad, and Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, which was founded in 1781 by Richard Allen.

Walk Through African American History – Washington, DC

This museum has 85,000 square feet of exhibition space nearly 3000 objects, 12 exhibits, 13 different interactives with 17 stations, and 193 videos housed on 7 floors.  Subjects include the era of slavery, the period of Reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Civil Rights movement. The museum’s foundation collections are representative and feature items from all regions of the United States. A place that transcends the boundaries of race and culture that divide us, and becomes a lens into a story that unites us all. Consider adding a dinner en route home.

Harlem Tour – Center of African-American Culture – NYC

Harlem is the center of African-American history and culture not only in New York City but in the entire United States. A guided tour could include the Apollo Theater, Columbia University, Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Market, Sugar Hill, and Grant’s Tomb. If time permits, we’ll also visit the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. After your tour, enjoy free time and lunch on your own.
